San Diego, named after Saint Didacus, is the second-largest city in California and the eighth largest city in the US. The city offers an amazing climate for year round recreation. In San Diego, the beach is a way of life, a source of pride and joy, a defining influence in people's lives. Whether you're a first-time visitor or life-long resident, you will enjoy the beach scene of this beautiful Southern California city.
San Diego's economy is largely composed of agriculture, biotechnology/biosciences, computer sciences, electronics manufacturing, defense-related manufacturing, financial and business services, ship-repair and construction, software development, telecommunications, and tourism. The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center promotes research in biotechnology.

San Diego has a Mediterranean to Semi-arid climate which is characterized by warm, dry summers and mild winters with some rain. Mild, mostly dry weather is the norm with an average of 201 days above 70 degrees. The climate in the area like the rest of California often varies dramatically over short geographical distances. In the case with San Diego this is mainly due to the city's topography (the Bay, and the numerous hills, mountains, and canyons). Frequently, particularly during the "May gray/June gloom" period, a thick "marine layer" cloud cover will keep the air cold and damp within a few miles of the coast, but will yield to bright cloudless sunshine approximately 5-10 miles (8-16km) inland.
